Issue No. 33/2020 – Friday, 11 September 2020 (Kitiona Tausi)
The Funafuti Community Hall (Tausoa Lima) was packed with invited guests that were invited by the spouse and family of the late Rev. Kalahati Tagisia who passed away while serving as Commissoned Minister to the Funafuti Island Community and also the President of the Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu to commemorate the first anniversay of his death.
The late Rev. Tagisia was appointed President of the Ekalesia Kelisiano Tuvalu (EKT) during EKT’s General Assembly in August 2018 at the age of 54 and at same time also appointed to take charge of the Funafuti EKT Congregation for a period of 4 years.
The late Rev Tagisia was inducted into the Funafuti EKT Church in November 2018 and passed away on 09 September 2019, two months short of one year.
Rev Tagisia is a gaduate of Kanana Fou Theological Seminary, Pago Pago, American Samoa and has served as Commissioned Chaplain to the Motufua Secondary School for 4 years, as Commssioned Minister to the Fetuvalu Secondar School, then as Comissioned Minister to the Nukulaelae EKT Church also for 4 years before becoming EKT President and Commissioned Minister to the Funafuti EKT Church.
During this memorial feast yesterday, many speeches commended his work while serving at the Funafuti EKT Church saying that athhough it was a very short time of less than one year, his work has shown fruits in the coongregation. One speech said that he was the first commissioned minister serving at the Funafuti EKT Church who also joined the Funafuti Church Choir and he encouraged the young men and women to use their lives to serve God.
EKT leadership is being questioned
In yesterday’s function to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of the late Rev. Kalahati Tagisia, the Minister of Transport and Member and one Member of Parliament for Vaitupu, Hon Nielu Meisake in his speech questioned the leadership of the Church.
He said that it an issue very important to the Church that without a leader, an organization cannot function effectuvely.
There are also members of the Church who also questioned the same issue, knowing that as from towards the end of last year, also the Acting President, Rev Iosefa Mautinoa has been absent from the country since then because of the lockdown.
According to EKT Constitution, if the President pass away, the Accting President will automatically becoms the Acting President until a new President is elected at the General Assembly. The late Rev Tagisia passed away in September 2019 and automatically Rev. Iosefa Mautinoa being the Vice President took over as Acting President.
Unfortunately, EKT’s General Assembly that should have taken place in July or August this year cannot be convened due to the State of Public Health Emeregency that has been declared and is still on.
EKT’s Genral Secretary, Rev Fitilau Puapua has announced the General Assembly will be postoned to next year because of the coronavirus pandemic as EKT has churches abroad and they have to be represented at the Assembly.
