Soccer tournament to compete for the independence cup

8 soccer teams in the A category and 6 in the B category and 6 women’s teams are competing in the current Soccer Tournament for the Independence Cup. Teams are formed by sports clubs from island communities on the capital.

The tournament was opened last Saturday, 12 September and the matches that were held that day were all held at the playground at the southern end of the runway.

The first match on Saturday was opened by Lakend United A, a team from the Nanumea sports club and the Haapai A, a team from the Nanumaga Sports Club. It was a tough game but ended in a draw, two goals each.

The second match was between Tamanuku A from the Nukufetau Sports Club and Funafuti A from the Funafuti Sports Club. At the end of the game, Funafuti scored 3 goals while Tamanuku scored one goal.

The third and the last match of the day was between Tofaga A team from the Vaitupu Sports Club and the Niutao A team from the Niutao Sports Club. At the end of the game, vaitupu scored 4 goals while Niutao did not manage to score any goal.

The tournament continued this afternoon with Funafuti B team playing against Nukufetau B team.

The Independence Cup is being sponsored by Mackenzie Trading Limited.
